Our group was founded to nurture the faith of the youth in our parish. We, as members, have always played an active role in shaping the group to meet our needs.
Back in 1990, Father John White, our pastor, approached Larry and Sandy Dower and asked if they would be interested in kick-starting the fizzled youth group. Mr. and Mrs. Dower accepted the responsibility with open arms and headed up a large group of adults, each contributing a great deal of time and energy into the success of the group. Some of the adults included Joe and Jan Rodgers, Jim Farrell, Tom and Linda Hamlin, Dan Phelps and Maureen Boyle (before they got married!), Ken and Dale Jaworski, and Michael Owens. Activities such as the Thanksgiving Baskets, Wreaths and Spray sale and the ski trip got their start back then.
Around 1995, Mr. and Mrs. Dower passed the reins to Mr. Farrell, his wife Margaret and Deacon Mike. They continued to maintain the careful balance of faith, charity and fun.
In 1999, the Farrells and Deacon Mike, in turn, passed the torch to Greg Smith. Greg had a very strong vision for the youth group and poured his heart and soul into it. Activities that Greg started to get the youth involved in included the moving and powerful Living Stations of the Cross as well as the once-in-a-lifetime experience of bringing a group of teens to Rome, Italy, for World Youth Day 2000.
In November of 2000, Greg made a very difficult decision to leave the Vernon area and move to Boston. Cathy Baldoumis, Cathy Nichols, and Cindy Dower then tried to pick up where Greg left off.
In 2006 Father John took over as the leader of the youth group with the help of Cathy Saleme (Nichols) and Hillary Brady.
In January 2008 Becky Maresh was added to the staff.
Even though names and faces change throughout the years, there are always some constants in our group. There will always be teens that are searching for a place to share their faith and desire to serve others. There will always be teens that want to have fun. And most importantly, there will always be a God who is eternally stretching His arms out for all to follow Him.
